The Semanticus African/South African Turban belongs to the gastropod group of shells. Gastropod is an animal bearing a head with tentacles and eyes, a foot and a one piece shell.

The Semanticus African, as with other Turbans are found in tropical seas.

The South African Top shell or Semanticus African is found off the tip of South Africa in offshore waters, mainly among stones.

Descriptions. As stated earlier Turban shells are gastropods. The Semanticus Turban shell is from South Africa. This shell has been thoroughly described earlier. The main difference is this shell has been dyed copper; whereas the Semanticus African Turban shell is polished with some nacre or mother of pearl showing.

This shell is often called the Tapestry Turban shell. It is a thick, heavy shell, glossy and completely smooth. The shell lip is usually yellow. Shell color and patterns differ with each shell. The Turbo Petholatis is often dark brown with darker bands, blotched and striped with white. Some shells are greenish yellow without a pattern. The outside of the operculum is bluish green at the center (often called the cats eye).
